In a car, there are many parts in the mechanism that require a sensor to send information to the car's computer. This is how the car flashes little lights at you to let you know when certain parts of the car aren't working. These sensors also allow new technologies on luxury cars to work properly. You can't have many of the fancy new features in today's vehicles without them.

Take, for instance, the headlamps in a car that turn as the car enters a curve. Those headlights use positioning devices to measure when the car will be entering a turn and which direction the vehicle will be turning. This is how the computer in the vehicle can anticipate the turn and point the headlamps in the right direction.

Cars with parallel-parking functions use the same technology to detect where other vehicles are, where the curb is, and how to turn a car safely into a parking spot. The vehicle can steer itself while parking because it is receiving constant streams of information on where everything is. The process is very safe because of the sensors that are feeding the data to the car's computer.

These same items can tell the computer where the throttle is, how the brake system is doing, the position of the camshaft, and even the state of the transmission. The mechanical components of a car all report back to the computer in this way. This also makes a mechanic's job easier because he can read the diagnostic codes that were likely provided by a sensor. The vehicle can self-regulate at all times without the help of the driver or the driver's technical knowledge.

The safety features also work through the help of these units. They sense when a collision occurs, where it has occurred, and which airbags of safety measures to deploy. The same goes for the locks on the doors, the windows, and the latch on the trunk. Every part is monitored to know what it is doing at all times. Again, this is why the little lights on your dashboard flicker at you from time to time.

New cars on the market almost exclusively use a computer to stay on the road. The machines that makes automobile parts, the parts individually, robot arms, and even surgical devices can use these sensors to function properly. Medical treatments are safer and more efficient because of the use of sensors. Plus, doctors can perform more delicate surgeries with greater accuracy.

Positioning devices make modern technology work well for the consumer. They get people from point A to point B just about everyday. They make medicine easier to administer, and medical procedures become much safer for patients. Plus, they save us money and produce products that are much easier to use.
