Folding hunting knives are of two types i.e. traditional pocket knives and lock back pocket knives. Lock back hunting knives have a blade locking mechanism which helps in avoiding unwanted flip of the blade. Traditional pocket knives are the ones which are very compact and can be carried easily.

Pros and Cons - The folding hunting knife can be folded into the handle which is why it adds to the safe carrying method. The chances that the blades get damaged are very less since, the blades are carried folded. The person who carries the folding pocket can feel safer as there are very less chances of getting wounds or cuts. The compact design of the blades makes them easy to carry tools.

Another advantage that the folding hunting knives have is the ability to be opened by one hand. This is possible through the thumb studs which allow the user to open the knife with one hand or thumb. Although, these folding knives have many advantages over the fixed blade knives, it has one major disadvantage. Many folding knives lag behind when compared to the strength of the fixed blade knives and hence often cannot be used for skinning large animals.

Beyond Hunting - Folding hunting knives are used for various purposes other than hunting. Some of them are cutting off the tree branches, crops, and cutting the hard ropes. Fishermen make extensive use of this knife for cleaning the fish and cutting the fish line.

Blade Types - Some of the hunting folding knives are made of a number of different blades intended for different purpose. Some of the blades used are clip point, drop point and skinning blades. A clip point is thin with a well defined point and is used for insertion; drop point is used for controlling while cutting and skinning blades are specially used for skinning the animals.

There are different shapes, models and sizes of folding hunting knives available. There are also knives with special features for use in specific tasks. Before purchasing any folding knife, one should always consider what purpose the knife will serve.
