Hands down we can all golf a better golf game if we just had some practice help. I'm sure you would agree that all the shots on TV look so easy, but none of us are armed with how to practice these so if we are faced with that shot we are ready to execute. A question I get a lot is "whats the best practicing method?" The answer, its different strokes for different folks. But, the biggest culprit..the one that truly keeps us at lackluster games is that we are not physically or mentally present when practicing. The mental part is a huge hurdle in itself and typically we sluff this part of our game off into wishing things happen on the golf course. Before we move on, let's be honest and agree that the mental part of our game has never been practiced. We are not at fault! Since we were kids, all we are told is hit it as far as you can...and the marketing guru's know this. I love the ad's get our driver and crank it over 300 yards!!. Oh boy...this is great! This is nothing more than the placebo effect and a very human thing to buy into. But after a month or two of using your new, expensive toythe slice comes right backeven worse. I think we (golfers) are all guilty of believing this noise because we are simply desperate and human! (note to the big companies who might take offense: Im a big BIG fan of all the advancements in technologyits just some of the marketing messages play too much towards the ego of the golferthe biggest chink in our armorand you know it! Please manufacturersI love your scienceagain, its the sales that seems leery to memy very humble opinionand all that other yada yada..friends??) Whoops....let me get back on target. Here are some common things I found to be an issue at driving ranges that should not be practiced. I don't want to say I'm an expert...but after 18 years of teaching I can NOT believe golfers are practicing to lose on the course. And YES, I get the fact that everyone want to know about the SWING. The swing is only half (if not less) the battle with golf. You need to have a solid mental game as well. Yes, I get it.you need some sort of control of your shots but if you have no clue HOW to retain a swing, HOW to practice correctly, HOW to really break your typical game and reach the next level, wellthen you are nothing more than a machine trying to meet critical points that no not deviate or they will propagate into other dependencies when attacking your shot. Huhwhat? Well, thats what many golfers are! From the weekend warriors to the ladies leagueall machines trying to resolve bad play from the outside inwhen the real trick is the inside out!! Whops, I get off track so easily.. OKhere we goa couple of tips that will most certainly help our your scores on the course.but please.read themuse themand have some fun: (this is just a subset of the full list. You can get all 15 of them for free at the golf help site!) #1) Stop hitting off of rubber mats. The stop-n-sock ranges do more damage then good! These produce unrealistic results. They actually save you from duffing or chili-dipping the ball thus providing a false sense of encouragement. Grass Ranges only from here on out. #2) Make note where you are placing the ball in your stance and keep it consistent. A HA-HA-HUGE MISTAKE MANY MAKE! Do not keep placing the ball at different spots in your stance when working on a certain iron. This does no good and it confuses your attack. It's hard enough for many to make clean contact. If you keep switching where the ball is at, jeez...I mean....do I need to go any further? ...and yes, 1 inch up or back is the difference between a chunk and a great shot. #3) Get a pre shot routine and use it before each shot. You may look silly...but the pre shot will set your swing and mind.
