Around the 1400s is when cigars came into existence, and rather quickly became popular as a choice in tobacco use. They have even become a type of art form which is no less a science than an art. Due to the nature of dried and cured plants, tobacco requires special storage which will maintain the original aroma and taste. In order to achieve this, it is important to have one of the Top Quality Cigar Humidors which are on the market.

Anything that was once a growing plant will only continue to dry out and become brittle with time. This is especially true when it comes to storing cigars, because they can also become tasteless, or even bitter. The humidor circumvents this drying out, and a good humidor has a built in hygrometer which continually displays the moisture content inside the box. There are certain types of wood which are specially chosen for building these boxes to help in preservation of the contents.

Depending on the preferences of the cigar enthusiast, humidors are available from desktop size for a few cigars, to full sized cabinets for hundreds of cigars. You can even get a smaller one that fits in the shirt pocket, as well as have them custom made for any unique interests. However, the type of wood used is the most important issue for providing flavor and consistent moisture.

Although it is grown in Brazil and other South American countries, Spanish Cedar seems to be the best choice for humidors because of its superb ability to absorb moisture, and it delivers the strongest aroma. Some people wonder about the properties of cedar for such a use as this, but Spanish Cedar can be properly dried before use in assembly to deter any resin build up.

American Cedar is often used by manufacturers because it is less expensive, and more readily available from the lumber industry. There is much less chance of resin build up from this variety of cedar, and it still has that strong cedar aroma which makes it a favored choice in humidors. It also carves easily and can be made into a very attractive item for any desktop.

Honduran mahogany is often used instead of Spanish Cedar because it has almost identical moisture abilities. One of the issues with this wood is that it can be riddled with worm holes which prevent a tight seal. However, when this wood is used as a veneer, that problem no longer exists and it delivers the same results as the most sought after Spanish Cedar.

When considering what humidors to buy, there is a choice between those made of solid wood and those that are only veneer. Due to the fact that wood expands, solid wooden cabinets could pose issues of stress on the seams which could cause moisture leaks and result in damaging the cigars. Veneers are sufficient at delivering the aromatic effect on the taste of cigars, and could possibly be a better choice than solid woods.

The art of collecting cigars will result in greater knowledge and understanding of what details to address, and knowing where the tobacco was grown is an important part in the proper setting of humidity for their storage. A Top Quality Cigar Humidor will have an equally good quality hygrometer to assure that the contents are being stored at a moisture level that is required.
