There's a marvelous event happening at one of the pubs near here this weekend. It's the boss's birthday and he does a free bbq on the closest Saturday afternoon. It's a splendid occasion, there's always a superb atmosphere with buckets of laughs and barrels for everyone whether they attend as a group of friends or as families. He's been at the pub for just over 2 years now, having taken it over as a failing establishment and has spent stacks of cash getting it right. This is a risk considering that pubs all over the region are going bust, some to be flattened for the rebuilding of the site, others are having their uses changed and most are just boarded up and looking forlorn. It was an unpromising business to take on, though it was at least still open. But he's set about methodically improving it bit by bit. The initial thing was to sort the beer out which he did and now has a small but excellent range of real ales, lagers and ciders. It needs to be small because the bar itself is, and he's made the most of it. Simultaneously, his wife set about the food, redid the menu and offered very good deals on weekday steak nights and slowly gained a good reputation and regular customers. That was the basics done and mostly what a pub is about and then he started to build on it. He got hold of an enormous Weber bbq and threw the first of his free bbq afternoons. He also had the big garden wholly re-fenced so that youngsters could run around without the worry of them getting out and straying onto the road. Once that was complete, he got some basic garden swings and slides to encourage families to come knowing that they could let the children loose while they had a drink. The Weber bbqwas a masterstroke however, as it is a feature in itself, catching admiring and covetous attention, mostly from men. It is often asked why it is that men take over the cooking when it comes to having a bbq? I would ask why women make a point of not getting involved but that's an aside. The next things that happened were that he got a chicken coop and installed a dozen or so chickens and a cockerel and then adjacent to that, fenced off another area, dug a pond and got some rare breed ducks which the children love. The eggs of course wind up in the kitchens and now and then a batch of chicks are hatched and grown for a few weeks and this weekend a few of them are going to find themselves on the Weber gas grills for the birthday bbq. It is sure to be a splendid afternoon. Breweries on previous occasions have provided branded merchandise to either give away or to use as prizes for games and competitions. I have a very nice Fosters lager straw hat from last year, something everyone was given as long as stocks lasted. Talk will inevitably turn to the theme of the main focus point as the lads speculate on the expense of Weber gas grills and how they could justify getting such a superb piece of equipment to the wife and hoping to get a go if the birthday boy takes a break. So many hamlets have been decimated where pubs and post offices have been closed, in many cases forever. I was going to say for good, but that would be wrong, but at least the village has a proper focal centre again because all of the above has worked and against all the odds, the pub is thriving.
