What will you need to focus on when organising a quiz? A big prize? Plenty of alcohol? Fierce competition? Good company? Well, you should certainly be aiming for a few of these, even if in moderation.

What will you need to focus on when organising a quiz? A big prize? Plenty of alcohol? Fierce competition? Good company? Well, you should certainly be aiming for a few of these, even if in moderation.

Questions

It is a myth that the questions need to be really challenging for them to be considered good. Yes, quiz participants will want a challenge, but a balance will need to be met between the really tough and reasonably easy.

When writing quizzes I aim for 20, 20, 60; that is 20 percent of questions fairly easy, 20 percent fairly hard and 60 percent of average difficulty. This is because you want to allow everyone to contribute to the answers, not just the handful of people who have an encyclopaedic brain.

Prizes

Generally I find that people don't enter a quiz night to win the prize - they do it to be social, to be challenged and to have fun. They also do it to wrestle with the knowledge of the other participants! However, giving out the prize can be part of some mild entertainment by getting the winning team to bet their claimed prize for something even better!

Get them to pick from an envelope, spin a wheel, play a game of some sort - whatever you can think of that will get everyone laughing!

The QuizMaster

Confidence when speaking to a lot of people. A good sense of humour. Patience. Fair. Firm. These are the attributes of a good quizmaster. A nervous quizmaster who allows points to be given for incorrect answers just because people are shouting will result in a poor quiz night.

Alcohol

Some alcohol can certainly add to the party atmosphere and relax everyone. Remember, they are here not to sit in an exam but to take part in a fun night out with friends and challenge themselves. The most important feature of the night is FUN FUN FUN!!
