One reason why contestants on the Biggest Loser have great success is that all they have to do is lose weight. They aren't commuting to a stressful job, keeping young children busy all day, cooking for a family, or all the other daily life activities that can make it hard to find the time and energy to lose weight. But busy moms can lose weight quickly and safely following a few simple rules. 1. Stop drinking calories. Switch from sugary colas to diet. Swap mochas for skinny lattes with sugar free vanilla. Drink skim milk instead of whole (you can transition to low fat first). Stop drinking juice (eat fruit instead). The best switch is to drink more water. By swapping high calorie sodas and other drinks with diet and low calorie options you'll save hundreds of calories a day without sacrificing your thirst. 2. Have fun! As you get older, exercise is more important to keeping your body working efficiently. But exercise doesn't have to be a chore done at the gym or running a marathon. Instead, go outside with the kids and play. Tag and hide-n-seek can burn calories, give you time with the kids and is fun. Or if you have a baby, take him for a walk or hike in a stroller or baby pack. Dance classes, tennis lessons and other classes can be fun while also burning calories. 3. Make better food choices. Dieting is no fun. But eating better doesn't mean your food can't be good. Its as easy as swapping refined foods such as white rice for whole grain ones such as brown rice. Add veggies and fruit to every meal for the nutrients and fiber (which is filling). Find ways to make your favorite foods less fattening. 4. Watch portion sizes. Eating portions two and three times too large is one reason people struggle with weight loss. Large quantities of food, even healthy items, can add weight. Learn how to eat a single portion by reading labels and measuring food. Drink water or have an apple to fill you up if one portion isn't enough. 5. Have healthy snacks. Skip the high calorie snack options such as chips and instead have healthier options. Air popped popcorn with spray and popcorn seasoning is a filling high fiber snack. Almonds, peanut butter with celery or an apple, vanilla yogurt, and frozen berries also make healthy snacks. 6. Have small desserts. You don't have to live the rest of your life without eating the yummy stuff. I have some chocolate every day, but only 150 calories or less. Ice cream is available in low-fat, low-sugar options that are still tasty. Do allow yourself to indulge in dessert, but do so in moderation. Losing weight with simple changes is not that hard. You don't have to change your lifestyle completely to make better choices about what you eat. In fact, switching your high-calorie drinks and food for healthier alternatives, playing with the kids, and watching how much you eat can lead to fast weight loss.
