Is it Really a Therapy? Enhancing health and wellness and treating common ailments with the pure essence of plants is aromatherapy.

Purity and Quality Purity and quality of the oils is a significant factor in anything used for health. Quality is dependent upon species, variety and variations in soils and climate. Purity is the result of handling. Organic growing without contaminants, and careful cultivation, harvesting and sanitary handling by humans, not machines are required for purity. Whether in the handling parts of plant material that do not belong to the essential oil type - waste or leaves instead of flowers, for instance, is another purity factor. The extraction process affects purity. Some process can leave traces of toxins. Also you must make sure the oil is not cut with a low quality oil or carrier to enhance the marketer's profit.

It Takes a Lot to Get a Little Have you wondered why essential oils are so expensive? Aside from the human care required, consider how many plants it takes to get a drop of oil. A specific part of the plant is used for each oil. It takes volumes to get just a few drops of oil. This is also why it is so very concentrated. Certain plants have smaller parts and less oil than others. This makes them very expensive.

Buyer Beware This is why you are not going to find real essential oils that are suitable for therapeutic use available over the counter in stores. You also do not find real aromatherapy products in large discount and drug stores. They specialize in cheap and quality oils and the making of the products is not cheap. Real aromatherapy products do not use preservatives or chemicals. They use no toxins and they must be prepared by hand. You get what you pay for and only specialists deal in real aromatherapy products. The mass produced products touted by the media as aromatherapy, are really just chemical fragrances, disinfectants and air fresheners.

Chemotype vs. Chemistry Aromatherapy is not scent. It is the effect of a chemotype on the body system through absorption and assimilation. A nice small can affect our mood, but moreover, an essential oil affect s mood (and other things) by interaction with our body chemistry on a physical level. The essence of the plant is the part containing the chemotypes, or the chemistry of the plant, that which can affect other systems and react with other chemistries.

The Drawbacks of Extracting Chemotypes Occasionally some chemotypes are extracted and put into formulations. Although the chemotypes are the same, the quality and handing is not, and the extraction often negates the overall beneficial effect that is rendered by synergies of all elements and properties within the natural compound. A drop of pure essential oil is composed of a few or several chemotypes. It is the combination that gives it the unique properties. The chemotypes do not have the same effect or effectiveness when isolated and used alone. This is why natural medicine, essential oils and herbs and natural vitamins and minerals are far superior to those synthesized.

Science is Good This is not to say that we should shun pharmaceutical products. Science has enabled man to increase potency, duration in the blood stream, timed release, sustained action and to more specifically target actions. Drugs give us more control. They also are far less expensive than natural essences and the quality is standardized to a degree which you cannot with natural products.

Essential Oils at Work

Holistic Multitasking The healing properties are physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, just as we are. By working on many levels of healing, they provide a means of bringing ourselves back into balance on all levels.

Cell Barrier Permeability The oils take effect by entering the bloodstream and thus the cells of the body, affecting tissues, organ systems and the nervous system. Whether inhaled, imbibed, or absorbed transdermally, they go into the body and blood and the molecules are small enough to pass the blood brain barrier, thus affecting our mind, moods and emotions. It is in this way that certain oils may act as anti-depressants, euphorics, sedatives or stimulants. Other oils can help balance the hormones, or act as aphrodisiacs by balancing hormones or mimicking pheromones.

How are Essential Oils Used?

Use in the Home Aromatherapy essential oils are easily used in the home. Try real aromatherapy candles and incense, or aromatherapy diffusers. There are many types for any room or situation. For yourself use aromatherapy bath salts, lotions, body oils and sprays.

Aromatherapy Blends Aromatherapists create blends called synergies, in which the essential oils work together synergistically, having a greater modified effect than they might have alone. They use the essential oils to balance, temper, and buffer or enhance other essential oils in the blend. They also create new synergistic effects through combinations.

Fun with Blends Aromatherapy is safe, fun and effective. Start by experimenting with different combinations to see which ones you like. Make some blends for your diffuser to enjoy in your home. You can make different scents for different rooms or moods. Make a body oil or bath oil. Start with having fun.

Alchemy by The Alchemist I created the following categories for my blends. The last category is a product that is my own unique creation. The second contains a line of blends to be used with the Tarot.

1. Therapeutic Blends 2. Meditation Blends 3. Therapeutic Perfumes.

Therapeutic Blends These are not for a mood or lovely aroma (although many are exquisite - or not), but for their physical benefits. They may target pain, inflammation, warts, cysts, fever, cold, bronchitis, etc.

Meditation Blends It is easy to see how the exquisite scents of the aromatherapy oils can transport us and assist us in reaching a meditative estate. Once on our journey, the choice of blend can help us to invoke the wisdom and spirit attitude we are trying to achieve. Churches and temples have long values essential oils for this purpose, using the potent incenses in the services. The essences were thought to be magical.

Aromatherapy of the Tarot For those who are familiar with the tarot you know that each card of the major arcane contain ns much symbolism and has an archetypal energy. Each essential oils has a spirit and by creating a blend to match the spirit of the card, we can evoke the archetype, to help us embody it and its lesson..

Using Meditative Oils Use for relaxing meditation, chakra meditation or visualizations. Diffuse the blend into the air and inhale deeply letting it permeate your and lull you into alpha state. For chakra meditation, dab oils on the chakra centers.

Therapeutic Perfumes Why just smell good when your perfume can be doing something good for you as well, supporting your heath instead of adding toxins to your already overloaded system? These are real perfumes, made the true way, as of old, from real essential oils. The scent of real rose, jasmine, and sandalwood is amazing. People have grown so accustomed to chemical perfumes that they no longer recognize the real thing. There is no comparison!

Common Sense And Safety Essential oils are not regulated by the FDA As natural products, they work differently from pharmaceuticals, by helping to bring the body back into balance.

* IMPORTANT: Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not drink oils. Avoid contact with eyes. Not for nursing or pregnant women or those with seizure disorders. Choose oils carefully with blood pressure problems. If in doubt, consult a certified clinical aromatherapist such as The Alchemist. Keep closed and out of sunlight and heat.

A Book? I have sold my blends for years, and so many people want the recipes for them. So I am thinking perhaps writing a book of blends. As I progress on my path, such things are unfolding.
