Most people understand the instinct that most people have. This instinct tells us that untrained people are unqualified. This is often seen in various civil suites. These suites often are a result of untrained and unqualified employees and technicians. Consumers are much more comfortable with purchasing from highly qualified individuals. This is also the case in the health care arena. Patients are more comfortable receiving care from a doctor who has completed higher levels of education.

CME is a specific type of continuing education, geared towards helping those in the field of medicine, learn new areas in their specialty and or field. There are various ways in which this might occur. This includes online programs, media, publications and online programs.

Most of the content and work for these programs are reviewed and developed by expert faculty members in specific clinical areas. As a way to ensure total neutrality, any and all financial relationships that the faculty members possess, must be fully resolved and disclosed in a timely fashion. This is due to those having opposed this program state that device and drug manufacturers use sponsorship and money to create bias in hopes of marketing their products.

The programs requirements vary by location. Currently, it's available in North America. The United States and Canada's CME program requires all attendants complete specific requirements in order to receive their license. Each state within the United States have distinctive qualifications in order to obtain this.

Also, it is heavily regulated and overseen. The Canadian requirements differ from those in America. Each student is required to complete a specific amount of college credit hours. On the other hand, promotional programs or non-CME programs includes a variety of educational programs for medical professionals, often sponsored by those in the industry.

These programs are usually geared towards promoting specific therapies and or products. Unlike the CME program, the Non-CME program is product driven and have regulations set in place against the promotion of other products, brands or labels. It also lacks accreditation and more.

Fortunately, the CME program is currently being developed and delivered by a multitude of institutions. Some of these institutions include professional associations, hospitals, educational institutions and medical organizations. Insiders have noted that successful completion of this program, drastically increases the competence level of doctors by 75%. This aides in the reduction of malpractice incidents. Due to the consistent change in the medical industry, more and more physicians are seeking to further their knowledge base, thus empowering their craft and abilities.
