There are many factors which will need to be taken into consideration by a woman after tubal reversal surgery has been carried out and she is looking to conceive. Certainly for some women once the procedure has been done, they find they become pregnant quite quickly afterwards, but for others it will take some time. There are a number of different factors a woman will need to consider in relation to her pregnancy after tubal reversal actually being successful.

A woman's age - As a woman grows older the chances of her conceiving become greatly reduced even if she hasn't had tubal ligation. However for those women that have had tubal ligation and then choose to have the operation reversed, they may find it even more difficult to conceive no matter their age. Although the chances of a woman conceiving after having the tubal ligation reversed are greatly increased the younger they are.

For women who are under the age of 30 the chances of them getting pregnant after this procedure is around 77% but the older the woman is the chances of them conceiving are greatly reduced. For those women aged between 35 and 39 the chances of them getting pregnant drops to 62% and for women over the age of 40 their success rate is only 34%.

The next factor that plays a part in getting pregnant after a tubal ligation reversal procedure is how long the fallopian tubes were left from the original tube tying procedure. The more the doctor has to work with the better the chances are. Some will find they conceive quickly but others will take five years or more. The condition of the fallopian tubes, the length they were left and thus what the doctor has left to reconnect, and how well they are reconnected all play a part in how soon you can get pregnant and what your chances of getting pregnant are.

Again time has a part to play in this next factor and that has to do with how much time has passed since the original tubal ligation procedure. A woman who is having a tubal reversal done only five years since her original surgery to have her tubes tied will be better off than someone who has waited fifteen years or better. The longer it has been, the longer the time for some damage to occur to the tubes which means the greater the chances of things not being successful. However, we are not saying you can't conceive after a tubal ligation reversal, only that you shouldn't waste time if that is what you want and to be aware that it is a factor.

Something else you may have considered, or are considering, is using in vitro fertilization, or IVF, instead of undergoing the reversal surgery. Your doctor may even push this option. However, a number of studies found that women having the tubal ligation reversal are more successful in conception than those undergoing the IVF treatment.

One such study from the Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center, www.tubal-reversal.net, where they keep excellent track of their patients, it was discovered that the women who had the tubal reversal done, instead of the IVF treatments, conceived more easily. In addition, the number of actual babies born after they became pregnant, was higher for the tubal reversal surgery than for those who underwent IVF. Even better is that the reversal surgery is done generally on an outpatient basis with only about an hour in surgery thus lowering the cost of this treatment versus the IVF treatment which can take many tries.

By taking into consideration the factors above a woman will be able to make a more informed decision as to whether this type of procedure is right for her or not. It is important to remember however that pregnancy after tubal reversal surgery may not always happen immediately and it will take time before a woman is able to conceive.
