Pug dogs are one of the most popular breeds for pet owners today, and anyone considering adopting one should educate themselves a bit about pug dog health.

This breed has been with us for over three thousand years, and this short haired animal has been a member of the AKC Toy group since 1885. You probably would recognize one on sight from its flat wrinkly face, thickset body, and curly tail. Pugs generally weigh between 13 and 20 pounds and are about 10 to 14 inches tall.

The features that distinguish the pug would be part of why they are so desirable (and why humans find them so cute), but unfortunately these features give pugs unique health problems that their humans have to keep an eye out for.

One of this is the dog's wrinkly skin. The folds of the skin create pockets which can collect dirt and bacteria which can cause infection to set in. Therefore, you must take care to keep your dog clean, bath him properly, and make sure you clean out inside the folds of the wrinkles. If you notice any sign of infection, take your pet to your veterinarian right away.

Another common problem with pug dog health are the eyes. Pug eyes are not well protected because of the way their eyes are shaped and the where the eyes are on the face. This could lead to injuries and other complications. You should regularly check your pug's eyes for ulcerations and make sure you get your dog to the vet immediately if you see any problems.

Another problem with Pugs is obesity. Like human beings, pugs that overeat will become overweight and this will adversely affect their health. As the owner, it is your responsibility to keep your dog from eating too much. Help your pet maintain a desirable weight by feeding him nutritious foods in the proper amounts.

Pugs are very sensitive to heat and humidity, so don't leave your dog outdoors without shade or locked in a car during the summer. An overheated pug can have a hard time breathing, so make sure that you don't leave him anywhere where he might be subjected to high heat for any length of time.

All pets need to be taken care of in a responsible manner, and by doing this for your Pug, you can assure your pet's health and wellbeing for years. Provide your pet with regular Vet care, exercise and proper nutrition as part of your Pug dog health regimen and your furry friend will live a long and happy life.
