Chances are you or a family member is going to travel abroad for business or pleasure this summer. Most people dread a long flight in an economy seat especially if they are traveling with children. Following some simple tips can make the trip more comfortable.

Select your seats by consulting seat map guides online, especially if you are traveling in a group. You can request the seats you prefer while buying the plans. Sometimes getting to the airport early may help you get the seat you want. If you want extra leg room you can get the bulkhead seats or the seats in the exit row. Try not to get seats near the restrooms and the food prep area.

A neck pillow is a must for people with neck and back issues. The airline pillow can be kept on your lower back for some extra support. Twist your torso every once in a while to keep it loose and limber.

To prevent swollen feet rotate them at the ankle in a circular motion. Flex and stretch your feet often to maintain good blood flow. To avoid the dangerous condition of deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the veins in the legs) try to walk in the aisles every few hours.

Moisturize your skin often, the in flight air is very dry and can make you uncomfortable. You can also use sprays with essential oils on a damp face cloth to revitalize your skin. Drink plenty of water and avoid dehydrating drinks like alcohol and coffee.

Changes in air pressure can make your ears pop. Chewing gum, yawning and drinking fluids can relieve those symptoms. You can get a terrible earache if you have a cold or an infection so be extra careful.

Wearing loose clothes in natural fabrics is key to staying comfortable. Your feet can get swollen so try to wear slip on shoes that are not very tight. A jacket or sweater may be useful if it gets cold onboard.

Having health insurance is a must when you travel abroad. You can be covered during transit if you include the dates of travel in your insurance. Your travel insurance agent can help you select the best plan.
