Always having a reason to drink: Most people drink simply because they feel like doing so. When somebody always has a specific reason, then you can just as well look for other signs of alcohol abuse as well.

Trying to keep a drinking habit secret: The vast majority of alcoholics will go to great lengths to keep their drinking habit a secret, both from their loved ones, and from their friends. In this case, they'll usually leave the house frequently for trips to the local pub or they'll choose to drink once their partner has retired for the night.

Unable to say no: If somebody can't turn down the offer of a drink, irrespective of the time, or location, then there's every reason to suspect alcohol abuse. Remember, alcoholics will experience withdrawal symptoms if they don't drink.

No limits: Rarely will you see an alcoholic have one drink and then walk away. Instead, because they can't control their habit, they continue drinking until they simply can't drink anymore.

Feeling that your life is better when you drink: If your only bright moments in life seem to be the ones when you are wasted, then you have a serious problem. Remember that alcohol clouds reality, so to temporarily escape reality doesn't mean it becomes reality.

Using alcohol to pick themselves back up: While all alcoholics abuse alcohol, they do so for a variety of reasons. One think you can be sure of though, is that they will always be able to find a reason, irrespective of their mood.

Increasing the amount you drink over time: If you need to drink more and more to get the same high, then you should be very concerned. Even though the body might not react to the intoxication as fast, the toxic impact on the liver and the rest of the body is still great.

Drinking to function: Perhaps the most definitive sign of alcohol abuse is when a person is simply unable to focus on day to day activities without at least having a single drink. If you know someone in this position, you can be rest assured they have a drinking problem which is serious enough to warrant professional help.
