If you want to help reduce the visible signs of aging, dermal fillers are a popular and affordable alternative to plastic surgery. With dermal fillers, a natural or synthetic filler is injected into a person's skin to reduce aging signs such as wrinkles, or can be injected into lips or cheeks to boost volume and add body. The procedure is quicker, easier and more affordable than the cosmetic surgery alternative, and also benefits from minimal recovery time. However, some people will want to know if the procedures are safe and what are the side effects. There are two basic types of dermal filler - natural and synthetic. If you thought that dermal fillers are a new idea - think again! As far back as the 1890s, doctors were injecting natural dermal filler - human fat taken from elsewhere in the body - in order to make patients look younger. Since then, there have been many advances in the use of natural fillers, with FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approval of collagen (sourced from both cows and humans) making a big impact since it was discovered to work in the 1980s. However, there is a very slight risk of someone suffering an allergic reaction to collagen. This is only a problem for between 2% and 3% of people, and as such, reputable dermal filler practitioners will carry out a skin test on prospective patients at least a couple of weeks before any collagen treatment is carried out. However, the vast majority of people have no reaction at all, and many comment that the procedure is completely painless, with the only side effect being the usual temporary localized redness, swelling or itchiness associated with any injection. Because synthetic dermal fillers like Juvederm or Restalylane don't contain collagen, they are totally safe and do not require an allergy test before treatment. Like their natural collagen or fat-based counterparts, synthetic dermal fillers do not require a surgical procedure, and the treatment can be over and done within 30 minutes. As for side effects, again, a person who has undergone the procedure may encounter redness, itchiness, or inflammation in the area of the injection. However, these side effects should disappear within two or three days. Another fact that may dispel any safety fears you may have about undergoing treatment is that all dermal fillers that enter the market in the United States will have undergone long-term and rigorous FDA safety testing. Once a product or treatment receives FDA approval, you can treat yourself to a rejuvenating, appearance-enhancing, dermal filler treatment without worry - all for a fraction of the cost of a visit to a plastic surgeon.
