Have you been considering having a chemical peel done? If so there are some things you should be aware of before you go forward with the procedure. If you are having the peel done in a dermatologists office then you will probably have too sit through a consultation to help the doctor decide if a chemical peel will be a good choice for you. If, however, you are considering the purchase of an at home chemical peel kit you will need to make this determination by yourself.

What is a chemical peel?

First, lets discuss what a chemical peel actually is. A chemical peel is a procedure normally performed in a dermatologists office with qualified medical supervision. It consists of an acid-based product, often a fruit acid, in the form of a cream or gel being applied to the skin and allowed to sit for a predetermined amount of time before being removed along with the outer layer of skin.

The chemical peel process actually removes the outermost layer of skin while it also removes all of the natural oils along with all of the contaminates from the pores. The depth of a chemical peel is determined by what concentration level the acid solution contains as well as how long it is left on the skin. The higher the concentration, the deeper the peel. The longer the treatment lasts, the deeper the peel as well.

Things To Consider

Is your skin extremely sensitive to irritants? Do you constantly fight rashes or other irritations? If you answered yes, you may not be a candidate for a chemical peel. The process of a chemical peel is itself fairly irritating to the skin. This irritation will be magnified if the treated skin is already prone to sensitivity.

Will you be able to stay indoors for a few days after your chemical peel? It is very important that you not go outside, especially during the daytime, for a few days after a chemical peel procedure because the skin has been stripped of its natural protection from the elements until it as a chance to replenish and heal. Dont think that it will be fine to go out as long as you stay in the shade because your skin is also not protected from all the dirt and chemicals in the air that you cant see.

What to do after your chemical peel.

The most important thing you can do for your skin after having a chemical peel done is to stay indoors for a couple of days. Exposure to the sun is an absolute no-no but, if you find yourself with no choice but to venture out, be sure to wear a generous amount of a very high spf sun block. Beyond staying inside, you should not expose your skin to any kind of irritant including makeup, cream or lotion. In fact, you should try not to even touch your springy new skin for a day or two just to avoid the possibility of the salts and dirt on your hand causing a problem.

While many people simply cannot afford to go to a qualified dermatologist and have to opt for an at home chemical peel, they should still make every effort to collect as much information as possible t help them decide if a chemical peel is right for them. The opinion of a qualified doctor is always the best source for this information but diligent research is the next best option when considering a chemical peel.
