What's most important to us in today's popular pajama styles? Comfort! We have tossed aside the stiff fabrics, formal button tops and matching bottoms and long gowns of yesterday and progressed into casual comfort.

Nowadays, our daytime clothing may not too too different than our evening sleepwear and lounging or relaxing clothes. It didn't take long for just about everyone to figure out that simple pants and shorts with elastic waists, paired with T-shirts and tops, were the perfect items to hand around in and hit the sack without changing into something new. We have our choice of materials, styles, and colors that all say the same thing: comfort.

Women have fought for years for designers to take new lifestyles into consideration when designing nightwear. They have taken "active wear" from the gym to the living room, the office, and to the bedroom. Pure necessity has turned major retailers from "lingerie stores" into stores whose clothing lines can be adapted to various activities from cooking breakfast to picking kids up from daycare.

Shorts and camis have replaced sexy little negligees, and this major style change can be seen in leading retailers all over. Even with the more casual styles, sexy isn't out of the question. Women can still feel very sexy with a cami and a pair of shorts, and men don't seem to be arguing the point!

Most men as well were all too happy to give up their formal pajamas for something more stylish and comfortable, not to mention more suitable to today's active lifestyles. Men's clothing designers have even taken this one step further by designing pajama-like styles specifically for casual day wear.

One reason these new styles are so comfortable is because new textile manufacturing techniques have shown us how to make flannel and cotton much softer. With combing, brushing and stone washing, there is no reason to ever have scratchy jammies on ever again!

With all these style updates, children's pajamas haven't changed much at all. They still want to wear their favorite super heroes and sports figures, and footed jammies are still to be found all over for winter wear.
