The very first thing you will need to do if you are building your won pond and waterfall is to make the decision on where it will be. The ideal area will have a few hours in direct sun, but plenty of shade also. Be sure that landscape drainage will not flow into the area you choose. Of course, it is important to be sure that the location is ideal for family to relax in.

Measuring off the place where the pond will go and marking the location off is the next step. Now is the time to trace the general profile of the area. Spraying paint on the outline is a good method that will stay much longer than chalk would. Staking the ground with tags is another way to do this. Utility numbers need to be called before a shovel ever hits the dirt.

It is best to dig several tiers in the pond, so that the sides are sturdy. It will also look better this way, and be more healthy for the plant life. Do not throw away any of the dirt, but add it to areas where you will need to build landscape for the waterfall. Make sure that the bottom of the pond is level. Dig out the area for the stream, building up the ground where the falls will be.

Once the pond and stream have been dug out, you will need to install the liner. Lay sand down in the bottom, smoothing it out. You will need help laying out the liner, since it needs to be carefully carried to the pond already spread out. The liner cannot be dragged at all. Be sure to purchase a high quality liner, this is not a good place to skimp. You do not want to have to dig all of this up later to replace a cheap liner.

The equipment installation will be your next step. Water pumps, filters, and a skimmer for the water garden will be included in this part. Since you cannot use a regular extension cord to run to the water for these items, it is best to hire a professional electrician to install an outdoor outlet which is safe near water.

Your next step in the process will be to add gravel and rocks to the project. Before adding the stones, putting in a overlay on the liner is a good idea. Let your rocks be various sizes and shapes to not only look good, but help the wildlife as well. After hosing off the stones, pump the nasty water out of the area.

After all of the stones have been placed, look again to be sure there is no dirt left. Pouring in fresh water is the next step. Unless you have a well, you will need to remove the chlorine from the water. Otherwise, the chemical would kill any wildlife you may add to the area.

Putting the wildlife in will be your final job. Plant life helps to keep the pond clean and healthy. The animals should not be added until fourteen days after the plants have been there. That allows the plants time to clean the pond, adding nutrition to help the fish remain healthy.
