Have you noticed the nails on your deck, gutters, or baseboards looking old and rusty? Have they started popping out of place and causing problems? It is necessary to have these fasteners and fixings replaced so often. Here are some tips that should simplify the process.

Fasteners and Fixings-Removing And Replacing Those Old Nails

Removing old nails is sometimes not as simple as you might think. Sometimes, this can't just be done with the end of a hammer.
* If the nail has popped up a little bit, you may be able to use a tool called nippers. With nippers, you can grab on the nail and rock it forth and back until it is loose enough to fall out. While using this tool, you must be careful enough not to cause the wood to splint. Do not cause the wood to splint.
* When you are trying to replce a nail with a large head that is flattened with the surface of the wood, it could be daunting. To ensure less damage to the wood, take a putty knife and coax it under the head of the nail. While moving the knife around the nail, you can then gently tap the end of the putty knife. When the nail is loose enough, you can then use nippers on it.
* Finishing nails, normally used for baseboards have small heads. This might make it difficult to use putty knife or nippers on them. There are certain ways you can handle finishing nails. You can use a cat's claw tool to loosen the nail around the head. Using this method might damage the wood which may then require that you put extra time to sand the wood. If this doesn't sound like the method for you, consider loosening the board to where you can reach the back side of it. Through the back, you can easily pull off the nail without causing much damage to the front.

You can now hammer in a new nail in the same place. You must make sure that the nail is hammered in the right place. You will probably need to replace the nail sometime soon. You may better off replacing old nails with screws than with new nails.
