There is no one type of wine drinker first of all. With that fact as our basis for moving ahead, you can see where you might come up with a gazillion different answers. I know there is no number relating to a Gazillion, but let it be enough that there are plenty of different types.

There is no one type of wine drinker first of all. With that fact as our basis for moving ahead, you can see where you might come up with a gazillion different answers. I know there is no number relating to a Gazillion, but let it be enough that there are plenty of different types.

The spectrum of wine drinkers ranges from the upscale wine club members on the east coast all the way down to your run of the mill street wino. And don't forget our European cousins that drink much more wine than we do here in the states. So who you ask about great wine, forms the basis for the answer that you are likely to receive.

So is the question even worth asking? From my perspective it is in fact. But who you ask may come as a surprise. You should ask yourself. That's right. What you think is a great wine is all that is really important when it comes to drinking the grape nectar. After all, it's your taste buds you are concerned with and not someone else's. You want to please yourself. You want to experience pleasure when consuming a glass of wine.

What you choose to drink will depend greatly on the situation you find yourself in at the time wine is to be consumed. The importance of that is the fact that not all wines fit every occasion. So you must know at least some of the basics concerning wine or you could end up having a very unpleasant wine experience.

Elementary Wine Course: There are 3 basic types of wine. What is known as White, Red and Rose' in the color realm. There are dry (non sweet) wines and the options run all the way to the sweet desert wines. There are wines that typically go well with certain types of main course foods, desert wines and wines that can be enjoyed all by themselves. All wine actually fits this last category depending on your mood.

The days of wine snobbery are for the most part over. As the 21st century progresses, it has become more important for the individual to enjoy their selection than fitting a predetermined set of circumstances dictated by wine snobs. Those supposedly in the know.

With that being said, it is important for your own sensibilities to know something about wine in general. To ask for a nice Muscat to go with your fillet at dinner, would not be a wise decision, since Muscat is a wonderful desert wine. As a child in the foothills of the north California coast wine country, I use to pick Muscat grapes fresh of the wild vines growing in our neighborhood and eat them like they were candy. As you can see, some knowledge can certainly be helpful.

It is completely acceptable to drink a white wine with a dinner steak these days. Although up until recently, it was sort of taboo to drink white wine with red meat such as Beef, Veal, Venison or other game meats. Red was strictly the wine of choice. That is no longer true.

At some upscale eateries that have a wine Sommelier, traditional guidelines about food and great wine pairings seem to continue to a certain degree. When faced with this situation, it is up to you and your comfort level in making your wine selection. So a great wine would still be one that pleases your palette and feels comfortable ordering. Say a nice wine that makes you smile as you put glass to your lips. A wine type I failed to mention is Champagne. It is basically a sparkling wine, that when close to your nose make even make you giggle as the bubbles popping about your nose tickle the sniffer.

Back to the original question. What is a great wine? I believe it's the wine that you like the most. A wine that brings you great pleasure. If you find fault with that, then just have a beer.
