Installing a doorlock is relatively simple, provided the right tools and door preparation. A Phillips Screwdriver or battery operated DeWalt drill will suffice. The first step is to check the door specifications. The major Doorlock manufacturers, such as: Copper Creek Hardware, Kwikset, Schlage, Yale and Emtek all have the same door preparation. The second step is installing the latch. The third step is installing the knob or lever or handleset through the latch. The standard bore hole preparation for doorknobs, levers, deadbolts and handlesets is a 2 inch bore that has a backset of 2/8 inch or 2 inch. Mortise latches face on the edge of the door that measure 1inch x 2 inches. A mortise latch can be radius cornered or square cornered depending on you preference. It must have a 1 inch latch hole that is bored through to the cross bore so the latch fits in the door. If you plan on installing a handleset or a knob / Lever with a deadbolt on the same door you will need to make sure the two holes are measured 5 " inchs center to center of each hole. The second step should be to install the latch into the edge of the door. It should fit through the 1 inch hole all the way through to the center of the cross bore. The latch should be facing the correct way toward the door jam so the door shuts properly. If you have a radius or square corner latch face it must be installed with the provided 1 inch wood screws. If you have a drive in latch option the screws are not necessary, you simply push the 1 inch latch into the 1 inch hole to make sure there is a tight fit and the door shuts properly. The third step is to install the door lock by inserting the knob, lever, deadbolt or handleset through the latch and connecting the back of the door lock with the provided machine screws. Make sure you install the knob facing the intended direction, making sure the key hole, privacy exterior or handleset is installed correctly. The 2 machine screws should be tightened down. Lastly, check the function of the door lock to make sure it is working properly. All manufacturers like Copper Creek Hardware, Kwikset, Schlage, Yale and Emtek provide installation instructions and will be able to give you this same information. If you are installing your new door hardware on a new door please make sure you follow the door preparation specifications listed above. If you are installing your hardware on an existing door, you will need to check the measurements to make sure your new hardware will fit. About the Author: Twenty years of experience with locks.
