When you switch on a light do you ever think of the creative potential of lighting in the room? Have you ever used it to accent a piece of art? Have you ever tried to set the mood for a room with light? If not why not?

When you switch on a light do you ever think of the creative potential of lighting in the room? Have you ever used it to accent a piece of art? Have you ever tried to set the mood for a room with light? If not why not?

Most of the time when we reach for the light switch it turns on a ceiling lamp. Sure that baths the room in light but does little else to create ambiance or mood. Yet there are multiple ways to light up a room. That include everything from track, to recessed to under cabinet lighting. Which you use when depends on what you're trying to achieve.

You see, basically light fixtures offer three benefits. They can provide enough light so you can do things like read, balance your checkbook or prepare dinner. This is task lighting. General lighting is used to illuminate a room. While accent lighting plays off the ability of light to bring to life specific objects in your room. And there are various ways to pull that off.

Versatile track lighting is directional lighting. You can shine the light where ever you need it. And it's easy to increase the intensity by simply adding more fixtures. This allows you to throw light on a specific piece of artwork or flood your kitchen work area. Track lights are the easiest to install and can be done without having to hire an electrician or carpenter.

Recessed lights placed in the ceiling let you shed light on parts of a room otherwise in the dark. So called "can" lights can shine a decent amount of glare free light. They're also discreet making them a good choice if you want attention to be on the object lit up rather than the light itself.

Now an easily overlooked space for lights is under your kitchen cabinets. The solution is under-cabinet lights which give you an easy way to brighten any countertop. These demur light fixtures often are hidden from view. Yet they offer both a decorative and functional upgrade that floods a specific area with light.

How about another variation? How about pendant lighting? These offer a tough of class to a room while bathing a space in light. Making them a great choice for pool tables, bars or kitchen islands.

And don't forget the dimmer switches. Not only can they help create ambiance while letting you put enough light on a subject for task light if need be, they can also save energy and prolong the life of your light bulbs.

Anyway these are but four ways to transform a room from underlit, gloomy and downright depressing to bright and cheery. While your lighting needs will vary, each type of lighting described here affects the mood in different ways.
