The portable washer dryer unit is an appliance designed for people, usually young and professional, who live in small living spaces. This is common in large cities where real estate is a premium, and also among students who have to contend with small dorm rooms. The portable washer dryer may be compact, but one disadvantage to keep in mind is that it is relatively lacking in power and takes small loads of laundry.

The spread of portable washer dryers has been driven by two issues that are faced by residents of small homes. First, they don't have the luxury of space that could easily have capacity for large home appliances. Next, the majority of condo units or apartments aren't truly designed to have capacity for bulky home appliances. Little homes however, typically lack gas vents or exhausts which clothing dryers will need.

Two other forms of compact washer and dryers are available, respectively termed combo and stackable types. Stackables are close to full sized save for their vertical physical arrangement, which makes them use up less area. The combo on the other hand, has both washing and drying functions bundled in one unit.

The stackable washer dryer is one in which the dryer is put atop the washer so that the two units are vertically arranged. As opposed to using up two spaces for both appliances, you'd be merely making use of one when you opt for stackable washers and dryers. If there is one downturn in using stackables, it is that the dryer would have to be positioned well above the floor which makes it difficult to reach.

Next on the list is the washer dryer combo which appears to be just one unit about 27 inches wide. You can do both washing and drying within a single compartment when working with the combination model. This suggests that for 50 percent of the space of the conventional washer and dryer, you've got a machine that performs both functions. Just about all combo units use condensation drying that calls for a smaller amount energy as compared to vented heating models.

This brings us back to the smallest and last resort in laundry appliances: the portable unit. These are more compact in size when compared to either the stackable or the combo. Portable units come in two models. The two forms of models are the ones run by electricity and the one which is handled by hand. The portables tend to have lesser capacity as compared to other home equipment so are only effective at holding a considerably smaller load of clothes.
