Celebrating Mother's Day with Edible Flowers PDF Print E-mail

Mother's Day is just around the corner. Most of us just send flowers today, and that's fine. But have you thought of a unique way to show the most special woman in your life how grateful you are for having a mother like her? Go ahead and say it with flowers - edible flowers, that is.

Mother's Day is just around the corner. Most of us just send flowers today, and that's fine. But have you thought of a unique way to show the most special woman in your life how grateful you are for having a mother like her? Go ahead and say it with flowers - edible flowers, that is.

Keep it, Don't Throw it

You don't have to throw away the beautifully arranged edible flowers of carnations, jasmine, and chrysanthemum that have been sitting on the vase for the past couple of days. You'd be surprised how carnation petals are actually sweet-tasting and both jasmine and chrysanthemum can add flavor to a cup of tea. But you may need to explain to your mom about these tasty and nourishing edible flowers first.

Not all edible flowers look good in a bouquet, like garlic, leeks, and onions. They are, however, just as good as gifts. These carry the same flavor as its bulbs, albeit a bit milder. Other edible flowers, such as the sage, marjoram, basil, and thyme would make great decors on the window sill. Your kitchen is sure to smell pleasantly with white lavender and other yellow edible flowers.

If you have enough garden space, throw in a few of these edible flowers: the sunflower, the tuberous begonias (the hybrids are edible and almost fruity), a few daisies, maybe some roses. These will not only brighten up any lawn, but keep up the food supply, too. Throw in a couple of tulips and pansies. These should make mom's garden bloom all year long with colorful and edible flowers.

Points to Ponder

Make sure that the edible flowers you included in your mom's bouquet are free from harmful chemicals and pesticides. Keep in mind that organic edible flowers are best to avoid any unfortunate incident. It's also better if you have ideas on your own, just in case she asks you to prepare them for her. Or, you could just purchase the edible flowers from trusted grocers - preferably already prepared and good to go - and spend Mother's Day any way you please.
