Germany is a massive country in more ways than one. Sure it's not quite as big as Australia or the United States in terms of land mass but it's still up there for things to do. You see Germany has a rich history. Even though the country that we now call Germany has not existed in it's present state, plenty of the regions have existed for well over a 1000 years. So if you plan to vacation in Germany, you won't be spoiled for things to do. Your first thoughts about things to do in Germany might be to stop off in Munich for the beer festival. That's a pretty good shout at it has to one of the most original events you are likely to see on a vacation. Sure, many countries have fastened onto the idea of having their own beer festivals but Munich is the true original and it has a atmosphere all of it's own. You will soon be mixing with some very happy and noisy Germans. Hmm...what could be the reason for that ? Maybe it's the copious amount of beer that is consumed in a very short space of time. However it's probably more about the way it is consumed than anything else. You have to pay to get into the festival grounds which consists of many large halls and tents. Lets just say that there is not that much to a hall or tent. The first is a express service of large steins of beer, the second is music that you can listen to or use as background music and the third is many large tables with benches. People sit together on each table and you will find yourself next to strangers. In my experience, you are only a few drinks away from making some buddies. And due to the world famous appeal of the festival you are bound to meet many people from all over the world including one or two from your own country. The beer halls or tents are so popular that you have to get in early. If you don't get in early, say mid morning, you may not get a place on a table and have to sit outside (which is not bad when the weather is good). With that out of the way, it's time for some serious drinking with a bit of food to line the stomach. The best scran has to be the sausages " ordinary or white sausages (cheese). Ok, it's not haute cuisine but it goes down a treat with beer. You can also get staples of German cuisine like pretzels and sauerkraut. The are some great sights and must do things in Germany, festivals are particularly popular in Germany and the number one festival is in Munich. It's known as the Oktoberfest but begins around late September through to early October each year. If you are lucky enough to be in Munich around that time you owe it to yourself to spend a day drinking some beer. And don't think that Munich is a one trick pony, there is much more to see and do in the Bavarian capital.
