Budgeting is all about making our dollar go further. Stretching our income to create a savings surplus a credit rather than deficit balance. Every household is different in means, circumstances, level of debt and savings. Setting up a family budget will support your efforts to control spending and accumulate assets and savings. Each one of us is different too. We have varying levels of money-management skills and motivation levels. We typically believe that we spend responsibly and are genuinely astonished by how quickly our money disappears.

We may well be prompted by the media's focus to consider looking at how we are managing our finances. Setting up a budget for your household is a great way to take and keep control of your money. It facilitates financial discipline. It is not an overwhelming task but it does require commitment. You will definitely need to have full information about your income sources and your financial liabilities.

One key element is communication, particularly with your spouse. You need to understand one another's role and perspectives to set up a budget that will work. To increase your chances of being successful you need to discuss your attitude, expectations and motivation to work consistently together.

Encourage members of your household to talk with work colleagues about ways to budget and save money. Read widely and consider how you could make suggestions work for your circumstances. View your first budget as a trial and keep everything that works and discard or replace the elements that are not practical.

Openly discussing and exposing your family's finances to close scrutiny can be very confronting and challenging. Feelings of discomfort and apprehension will be apparent at first. But these anxieties will soon be replaced by feelings of emotional security and control as your budgeting begins to work positively for your family.

When you set up the budget you need to list all of your expenses. Look carefully for the hidden costs. Make sure you include those expenses that occur annually. After you have listed your expenses group them into categories. You will be able to see from you from this information some factors that you can eliminate and make your dollars stretch. Check your bank statements to make sure that you include all charges.

Food, laundry and household cleaners, tissues, garden fertilizer and lawn mower repairs, the families lunches at work or school and linen would fall under the living expenses category. Haircuts, pharmacy, health club memberships, sporting expenses and medical, dental and optical could go into the family category

Your home will be one of your major budget items. If you have a mortgage you will also need to budget for insurance, property taxes and services and maybe your neighborhood homeowners' association membership. If you are renting your home you need to meet your rental payments on time. Whether you are renting or paying off a home you will need to budget for heating and cooling.

Transportation is of high importance due in large to the escalating fuel costs. Most people are unable to walk to work or school and any form of transport comes with a cost. Insurances, parking decals and parking garage fees, repairs, memberships for emergency breakdown services, taxi fares, bus and train passes all drain money from the funds that a family has to spend. Choosing to ride a push bike, motorbike or snow machine may reduce travel costs but special clothing may be necessary.

Setting up a budget means that we are more pro-active in looking out for innovative ways to reduce spending and costs. We may have been unmotivated to budget until and some realities had to be faced. While it may take some time to reduce fixed costs budgeting will help you minimize other expenses so that there is money to pay for the fixed expenses. Setting up a family budget will soon make you realize how fundamental it is to make your money worries disappear.
