For many people, starting their own online business can seem an insurmountable problem; if this describes you, eBay may be the place to test the waters of eBay home business. First, it is a great testing ground for trying your hand at selling; second, there is practically no risk to you; and third, you have a chance to feel what it's like to earn a little business income. Still, before you jump in, there are a few points you should be aware of, and in this article I'll try to point those out.

Do you know what you want to sell? You would be surprised at how many newcomers haven't thought that through. Don't worry if you haven't, but it is a good idea to consider that as that will have a lot to do with your future success. Although you can sell any number of products, it is generally best to select a particular product niche. Remember, you can always experiment and change your products around, but as mentioned before, at some point you will want to focus on a particular niche. What you have to gain from this is customer loyalty and trust as buyers enjoyed their auction experience with you will come back. The idea is to build trust and loyalty in one area before going on to another.

Determining what to sell is often as easy as asking yourself what it is that you know about, and that is actually standard advice given to beginners. However, I would take that with a grain of salt. That is easy to say and all well and good if you can convert what you know about into items for sale. But what if you can't? For starters, try following an interest. As you continue along your eBay path, you will end up learning and knowing a great deal about the products you are selling, and that interest and knowledge will be apparent in the descriptions you write for your auctions.

One thing I need to mention is that although being stuck for ideas of what to sell is not a big deal, in my opinion you have to at least be willing to be interested and if not, eBay may not be right for you. For inspiration, you can make a list of the kinds of things you like, visit stores and websites, and talk to friends and family. The standard advice I give to beginners to sell stuff around the house or stuff your family and neighbors no longer want--the point is just to begin. Almost anything will sell on eBay--take your friends' and neighbors' stuff and put it up for sale and see how it goes. The point of doing this is that after doing a few auctions the whole process will begin to make more sense, and you will be able to think more clearly about what you want to sell; and who knows, you may decide to stick with "junk," and you wouldn't be the only one to make a fortune doing so.

You will want to give consideration to things that stand a chance of making a profit that is satisfactory for you. If an item you are interested in is not well-know, don't worry as that is not necessarily important. EBay is the world's largest flea market and as such, there is a market for nearly everything. If you find a line of obscure items that you think could generate profit, give them a try as there is sure to be a niche interest on eBay.

If you find that you like selling and start making money, you need to know that if you are in the United States, you will have to declare it as income. You may also need to get a sales tax permit, sometimes also called a sellers permit, so that you can legally retail items to residents of your won state. If you sell to residents of your own state, then you will need to add sales tax and later remit that to your state department of treasury. This is not complicated, and you can find out more information from your department of revenue.

One other thing to remember is that not every day is a winner on eBay; everyone has days when their auctions lose. Everyone has them. No one's auctions score 100% of the time. Not giving up is the real key to success on eBay as it is with any business. Anyone can sell on eBay if they want to, and almost anything can be sold. EBay may not be for everyone, but it is a great way to start out in business at practically no start up cost to you. The next step is to take action--you could have an auction up today!
