When there is no hot water check for unlit pilot lights or one that may occasionally burn out or flicker. If unlit carefully relight the pilot light fire. If it burns out make sure gas controls are turned on the entire way. Also make sure the thermocouple is securely connected to the gas control unit and is close to the pilot flame.

If hot water exists but not in sufficient amounts, check the thermostat. See what happens after turning it up higher. Also examine pipes for openly exposed areas and try to add insulation to them. Sediment may have settled in the tank and reduced the availability of hot water in this way. Upon inspection, if sediment is seen, turn off the gas and drain the tank. Also look for leaky faucets that may need repair or replacement.

If water is too hot, the thermostat must again be checked. Try to lower its settings to a cooler temperature. Another possible cause of problems is if the exhaust vent is blocked. In this case remove the blockages.

When faucets are turned on in cold weather and no water comes out, pipes may be frozen. There are ways to prevent this from happening or to thaw them soon after freezing to prevent damage. To prevent initial freezing, keep a steady trickle of water going from each faucet. Heat exposed pipes with a small heater or heat lamp. Any uninsulated pipes should be wrapped with insulating materials such as foam, tape, or heating wires.

Once pipes have frozen shut off the water at the main valve and open the faucet closest the frozen pipe. This will allow the water to drain out as the ice thaws. In case there are leaks make the surrounding area waterproof with any containers or coverings available. Slowly warm the frozen pipe in the direction from the faucet towards the more frozen areas. This can be done with a propane torch, hair dryer, heating pad, or heat lamp.

Unclogging a drain can be done after examining stoppers in a sink or tub. Look to make sure it is open all of the way and not clogged with tangled hair or debris. If these are not problems the drainpipe is likely clogged. This can be fixed usually using a plunger or any chemical drain cleaner solution.

Not enough, or too hot water can generally be fixed with inspection and minimal correction. Malfunctioning exhaust vents, faucets, thermostats, or pilot lights are all easily corrected. Freezing pipes are preventable or can be slowly defrosted to protect against extensive damage. This is done with heating equipment like hair dryers or wires. A clogged drain can be fixed by clearing debris or adding a chemical declogger purchased from a store. All of these plumbing tips save money.
