First of all, you will want to take inventory. Knowing exactly what you have is essential to creating an organizational system that is practical and efficient. Divide all the products into categories. Include all products for sale and for employee use. Split them up based upon size, type, frequency of use and anything else you believe is necessary. Continually ask yourself about the priorities of your business. This will help to form an efficient system.

Perhaps you discover that there is too much of certain item. Put it on sale to make room for the items you find that are low in stock. Are there any products stacked in such a way that they are taking up more room than necessary? Remember to stack the heavier items on the bottom levels and lighter ones higher up. Now that you have everything organized you will need a place for all the products to be stored. Solid shelving and pallet racks are necessities when setting up your warehouse. There are a variety of pallet racks on the market and you want to spend a good portion of your time determining which type to use. Pallet racks are the only kind of rack that are specially made to be used with pull trucks and forklifts.

Although a lot of care may be taken it is only a matter of time, before there is damaged sustained to the pallet racking and when it does it will usually be on the lower levels. It's vital that you repair any damage quickly as it could cause a pallet rack to fall, costing thousands in damage or creating a serious injury or even death.

Some repair kits require welding and some use bolts. Some will demand that you unload the entire pallet rack, top to bottom and end to end. Although, with engineering improvements most repairs just need the immediate items removed from the rack.

There are many businesses that are going under who are selling of all their merchandise including the storage systems that held them. These can be picked up at a good price. However, it is a good idea to have an expert look them over before setting them up.
