The furniture style most preferred by professionals just starting out could be classified as modern. There just isn't enough time in the day for these professionals to have to worry about dusting every nook and cranny found in elaborately designed furniture and having to deal with knick knacks scattered about just isn't practical. In fact, when it comes to decor, clutter and chaos are out of the picture; designs with straight lines and organization are what is in vogue.

Looking at rooms with modern decor, they tend to include straight, plain furniture often colored in black or dark wood tones. These darker colors in furniture offr you the opportunity to give your room decor a sophisticated and classy feel. Knick knacks are kept to a minimum as the primary focus is placed on having only a small group of items that are the center of attraction. Fans of the modern style will just shell out the majority of their money on a small number of really original items, in lieu of cluttering the place with knickknacks. This past summer, for example, I purchased a vase made of Venetian glass while I was touring Venice. At the same time, I felt good about buying this, due to the fact that I wanted to find the one vase that would work well for me - I now have it.

Stark colors are usually at home in a modern room. You'll find green, red, white, and black to be the colors of choice for a modern room. These stark colors provide both an interesting and classic backdrop for the special items you wish to use to accessorize your room. They also happen to provide emphasis to the straight lines of your modern style furniture. A popular technique you can try is to paint your walls in blocks of different colors, this technique allows you to pattern your walls, for example, black and write blocks traveling diagonally from corner to corner. By installing shelves in various places along the blocks, certain pieces can be placed according to what matches best, black or white.

The saying less is best applies to designing in a modern style. When it comes to modern decor, you will never see couches and chairs with blankets draped on them, nor will you see such things as ottomans or baskets littering the floor; instead the focus of modern decor are a few large pieces of furniture and maybe some matching floor cushions, with a few side tables for your drinks.

Decorations for the modern look are always clean and crisp. Because young professionals can easily keep their area clean so they may host parties, they tend to love the modern style of decor. A slight snag may arise once you start having children, your home's modern style will most likely get lost among the mine field of toys your children may scatter.

What's more, you might not feel as warm and comfortable with a modern room as opposed to a classical one. You might feel the tendency to nag the children to keep clean, since thy are smudging up the walls or the furniture, and breaking things. Therefore, you might want to have your modern look before you get kids, or once you no longer have to host them.

Another option is to designate one special room and have it designed in a modern style where you can keep your more delicate and costly items and have it non accessible to children.
