In Old English, the word "pugg" means "playful little devil" and anyone who owns a Pug knows this to be true of their character. The Pug is a small dog but what it lacks in stature, it makes up for in style. Pugs are known for their short muzzled faces, serious facial expressions, curled tails, and soft snorting sounds.

During the Shang Dynasty, Pugs were bred to sit on the laps of the Chinese sovereigns. They were also kept by monks in Tibet. Sometimes, they are called "Lion Dogs" due to their similarity to the Chinese guard lions.

Later on in history, the Pug became the House of Orange's official dog when a Pug saved the Prince of Orange's life in 1572 by barking at an assassin. Goya painted Pugs in Spain and in Italy they were bedecked in matching pantaloons and jackets and rode by the coachmen of the wealthy. From time to time, they were employed as guard dogs and sometimes they were utilized by the military as trackers.

Her pet Pug carried hidden messages to her family when Josephine Bonaparte was confined in the Les Carmes prison. Now hanging in the Tate Gallery, painter William Hogarth included his pet Pug, Trump, in his self-portrait. Queen Victoria even kept Pugs as pets.

Pugs' coats are usually glossy and come in either black, fawn, silver, or apricot. They are extremely friendly and sociable dogs, despite their rather large under-bites and serious facial expressions. They are also a very intelligent breed and rank #57 in Stanley Coren's "The Intelligence of Dogs." Pugs are exceedingly fond of their human partners and ask for a lot of attention from their owners.

There are several types of Pug checks available. One series, for example, shows a photograph of an apricot Pug standing in a field of purple flowers. You can purchase matching accessories to correspond with these checks.

You can also buy Gary Patterson Pug checks. This series shows an image of a Pug asking to be fed. These also come with coordinating accessories such as address labels, contact cards, and a checkbook cover. These must be bought separately, of course.

You can also give the Pug Savers money when you order your checks through their website. The proceeds from your checks will go to the foundation which was created to help Pugs who can be prone to several different types of diseases.

Pug Pros also offers a similar deal. With this organization, though, you can even have your own image of you and your favorite Pug printed right onto your own checks. The proceeds will go toward this Pug saving foundation.

The Pug checks by artist Linda Picken are another option. These checks pay tribute to the devotion and lovability that the dogs provide, through the eyes of the acclaimed wildlife artist.

If you choose to purchase Pug checks then keep in mind that you can save up to 50% off when you order online.
