Area rugs are excellent to have in your home. They can incorporate ambiance and personality to a room and can change the entire feel of the house. Unfortunately, rugs can also be rather difficult to keep clean. There are a number of potential hazards that rugs are presented with on a regular basis. One example of these is pets. Yes, pets are awesome. They give camaraderie in addition to security. But they can also leave your rugs dirty and soiled.

Area rugs can get quite expensive and should be considered an investment that requires proper care and maintenance. This is why keeping them free from pet stains is important to every rug owner with pets. Below is a guide that you may find useful for removing those pesky pet stains from your favorite rugs.

The first thing that you will need to keep in mind is that the faster you get to a pet accident, the higher possibility you'll have of getting it completely out. When you see your pet urinate on the rug, get to it right away. Don't let the stain set because it is only going to become trickier to take out.

Use a clean cloth or some paper towels to absorb as much of the liquid as possible. Make sure not to rub on the area because this will only push the liquid further into your rug. Just apply the towels over the area and apply light pressure. You may want to set an object on top of the towels and step away for a few minutes.

Once you have removed as much of the liquid as possible, get a rug cleaning solution to use on the remaining stain. There are plenty of commercial products available on the market but if you prefer to save some money there are also household ingredients you can use, such as vinegar or detergent. For the vinegar, mix one cup of it with one cup of water and put the solution in a spray bottle. For detergents, mix a teaspoon of non-bleach detergent with a cup of water and also place it inside a spray bottle. Spray the solution onto the stained area of the rug and blot with a clean white cloth. Repeat this step until you have completely removed the stain.

The last stage in cleaning pet stains from your rug is to remove the excess water and cleaning agent. Rinse the area with water and then use a clean towel to dry it up. You can also use a wet/dry vac to help you remove the excess liquid.

Cleaning up pet stains from area rugs is something that you shouldn't be worried about any longer. Just follow the basic steps previously mentioned and you're sure to remove those awful pet stains in no time.
