There is something about the Mastiff breed that can melt a heart. These dogs are really big, they are lovable, and for the most part, they are the most wonderful pets that you could ever have. When you are decide to get a Mastiff it will be important to visit several Mastiff kennels so that you can see the different breeds of Mastiff up close and get a chance to see where your new puppy is coming from.

When you are visiting a breeder there will be some crucial signs to look for that will tell you whether or not the breeder is one that you want to get your puppy from. First off, the breeder will be very proud of their Mastiffs. They may have one or both of the parents for you to look at and you will be able to tell a lot about the breeder by the way that the dogs behave around the them.

Mastiffs are a breed that shows all of their emotion on their face. They have the most expressive faces of any breed and when they are happy and in love with their owner, you can tell. The breeder will belong to a dog club and have the ancestry of the puppy's parents available for you to look at.

The puppies should also have their first shots and be at least eight to ten weeks old. It is important that the puppies have been tested and have clearances from the vet for dysplasia of the hips and elbows, hypothroidism, and Willebrand's disease, they should have a certificate that their eyes are normal and that they have been tested for thrombopathia. These are the most common genetic diseases that Mastiffs can have so you want to be sure that your puppy is not prone to these chronic and painful illnesses.

If you are choosing a Mastiff to show, you will want to follow the AKC guidelines for show quality dogs. However, if you are selecting a pet, you can look for less than perfect looks. These dogs get very large, very quickly so if you don't have space for your Mastiff you might want to wait until you have more space before committing to your dog.

The darling little puppy that you are holding will grow to the size of the mom and dad. This is important to remember when you are deciding on the puppy you want. Mastiffs are incredibly gentle, docile, and patient dogs. They are absolutely wonderful with kids of all ages. However, if you can't stand a mess or drooling, you may want to select a dog breed that is smaller and doesn't drool.

I had two sofas in my living room, one for the family and one for my Mastiff. (My dog didn't like laying on the floor). I also got a king size bed because he slept with me and the queen bed wasn't large enough for us. He snored, drooled, and let my kids dress him up in clothes and galoshes on winter days. He was the camel each year during the Christmas play because he was the biggest animal that would stand on the stage with a pillow tied to his back without taking off. (He was a ham, I think he enjoyed being a star).

My Mastiff had his own seat in my small car and the kids buckled him in for every trip. He grew up with my kids and we both were sad when they left home. A Mastiff is not an independent animal that can take care of itself. They are great big lovable kids that will love you forever. When you are at Mastiff Kennels and are deciding whether you can make the commitment to a dog that will last a long time it is important to remember that these are beautiful and special animals that will depend on you for love, care, and attention as long as they live.
