What You Should know about Pet Turtle Care PDF Print E-mail
Written by Lucille Green
While turtles can make one of the most enthralling pets to own, not many are aware of how best to take care of them. They can not survive unless you supply them with the right amount of space, light and shade and enough moisture, so you ought to know exactly what they need to survive, before you possess one. Because a turtle hides and remains dormant during winter months, they should be kept outside, as they cannot do this if you keep them indoors, which may result in liver complaints. It is unwise to muddle up their normal way of doing things so when you create a pen outside, you are letting them live in the kind of environment they are used to.

It is unwise to muddle up their normal way of doing things so when you create a pen outside, you are letting them live in the kind of environment they are used to.

Some individuals who keep turtles indoors use refrigerators to make them hibernate. This is not advocated though because if the refrigerator suddenly increases in temperature or if the power goes off, their hibernation will be interrupted. This can be lethal for them so if you plan on keeping your pets inside, don't let them hibernate.

If you really decide to keep the turtle indoors, you need a tank of forty gallon capacity, with clearly demarcated areas for land and water. Sixty six percent of the aquarium should be water and one-third should be land because you need a place where they can lay in the heat of a lamp. The most ideal temperature of the aquarium are about eighty degrees and seventy degrees during daytime and night respectively. Because they are cold-blooded animals, they would need more time to acclimatize to temperature fluctuations.

Some turtles carry salmonella so be sure to wash your hands after handling them, but, their environment also needs to be kept clean too. Keep the water clean and free from waste matter, so it could be a good idea to invest in a water filtration system to make this happen. You should not use water from the faucet for the tank, because it contains chlorine and fluoride which can really spoil the ph balance. Use filtered out water for drinking purposes and de-chlorinated water for their swimming needs.

The water in which they swim ought to be de-chlorinated and filtered out water must be provide to them for drinking. There are assorted types of diets available commercially for your pet turtle, but the dietary demands depend basically on the species, however they must never be fed more than two or three times a week. Do not put any wood chips or tree bark in your tank because if a turtle ingests this, it can cause health issues plus it will also contaminate the water very quickly and cause molds or fungus to grow. Don't forget turtles need twelve hours of sunlight, so if you are keeping your pet indoors, you have to put up a Ultra Violet lamp to provide the Vitamin D3, which one can get from sunshine.

This is the reason why you see these creatures basking in the sunlight for hours, so when indoors keep the tank at a place where there is not much temperature fluctuation and some shady area for them to relax. You could either make them with wood and stones or buy them from pet stores, but if you want to keep plants in the tank, make sure that they are safe for the creatures. Endeavor to pay careful attention to your turtle's conduct and take care of it the best you can because they are very interesting to watch and will provide lots of enjoyment for your whole family.
