There are many reasons to love a 4 wheel drive vehicle (or 4X4), but often the price undercuts your hopes of getting a 4WD capable vehicle on a budget. Maybe you're just out of college ... or you're laid off ... or you just have to support a family on a tight budget. But why do you need a 4WD vehicle? They're too expensive right? A 4WD vehicle can be a lifesaver for families, and look good for those who enjoy driving. Here are reasons to consider.

1. Don't let the prices scare you; many 4WD vehicles are affordable on lower incomes

2. They are roomy for bigger families and long trips

3. 4WD trucks are almost always better in tough terrain like snow and ice. 4 wheel drive capable vehicles are heavier, have better traction, and are often designed to cut through dangerous snow and ice like a plow.

4. For families, they can be safer to drive when in an accident

5. More and more 4WD vehicles are green friendly and easier on the gas

So how do you choose a 4WD vehicle on a budget? Let's go over prices, fuel economy, mileage, and intended use.

Price - Let's say we're talking an affordable vehicle no matter what, not the brand new 4WD vehicle which costs the price of a house or is built for the military. There are more and more 4X4s with affordable prices. Why? Many auto companies are selling more price friendly vehicles. Also, more and more 4WD vehicles are being sold used than ever before.

Mileage - You want a 4WD vehicle on a budget, and want it to last a long time. Fewer miles on the odometer often means a 4X4 which will last longer. But, if you are saving up for a brand new car and want something to drive during the winter, you can get higher mileage 4WD for great prices. However, before buying any used vehicle, especially a 4WD vehicle over 10 years old, be sure to do your research. This includes showing it to a mechanic, and make a decision based on your safety. What should you look for? Consider the basics like oil leaks, worn tires, and the transmission.

Mileage - You want a 4WD vehicle on a budget, but also a truck which will last. Fewer miles on the odometer often means a 4X4 which will last longer. Look for problems with the engine, oil,and transmission. It's an unfortunate part of buying used cars of any kind that some are priced too high.

How Will You Use It? - Lastly, you should consider how you will use this 4WD truck in the future. Will you be vacationing across the country ... going back and forth to work in a warm state ... or through tough winter terrain? If you are going to be driving this 4WD vehicle a lot, you would want one good on fuel economy and with a trustworthy engine.
