Mens western wear has changed since the move west began centuries ago. It has not always been the denim blue jeans, black cowboy hats and fancy button shirts. However, this is what Hollywood and many people think it is all about.

Most cowboys of the early west would use either the black bowler hat or sombrero when riding the range and herding their cattle. These hats were not caught in the winds as easily as the ten-gallon hats that are seen in many movies. The famous Stetson hats were not wore by many until the 1870's.

During the American Civil War, General George Armstrong Custer fashioned a wool shirt that was not readily accepted by the soldiers. However, later on the plains in the west, most men could be seen wearing these shirts with their yellow piping and brass buttons.

Coats and jackets had more of a variety to choose from than other articles of clothing. Depending on the cowboy's location and weather, there were several options available. Some cowboys wore ponchos like the ones they saw south of the boarder, while other would use dusters or fringed jackets.

Not only were their shirts made from woolen materials, so were the pants in those early days. When the weather turned much warmer during the summer heat, they would switch to those made from a canvas material. Then during the 1870s, Levi Strauss designed and sold the first riveted blue jeans.

Over the years, as the cowboy's needs changed, mens western wear also changed. When the move was made to the west, the climate and the jobs necessary changed the type of clothing that was needed. Eventually, the design of the clothing trickled down into most people's every day wardrobe.
