An Overview Of Maternity Clothes PDF Print E-mail
Written by Adriana Noton
Maternity clothes are a fairly recent fashion development. Up until the 1400s, women's dresses were not fitted, so expectant mothers just wore what they had. If necessary, they would let the seams out to accommodate their pregnancy. The wealthy sometimes had a special dress or two made for the occasion, but the average woman did not. The first dress on record designed for pregnancy was made in the 1600s, a voluminous gown that concealed as well as expanded. By the 20th century, however, special clothing for expectant mothers began to achieve popularity. Still, it was far from cutting-edge couture, since clothing manufacturers did not believe that women would be willing to pay very much for garments that would be worn for so short a time. As the century progressed, expectant mothers were often employed until late in their pregnancy. Fashions changed, and more options became available.

For most of history, tops and dresses were styled to be very full in the front, with a hem that was slightly longer in front than in back. These designs can still be found, but recent designs also offer the option of a snug, curve-hugging fit. Stretch fabrics have begun to be used more frequently. Designers have also tended to avoid the overly large collars and giant bows that prevailed until recent years.

For years, maternity pants have featured a panel, made from a stretch fabric, that would cover the entire stomach. These styles are still available today, but the low-rise styles, with a stretch band that falls underneath the stomach, have become increasingly popular. Some pants and jeans have a combination of the two features so they can be worn either way. The low-rise bands are sometimes ineffective or uncomfortable late in the pregnancy, so many women prefer the ability to choose how to wear the garments. Pants may also have an expandable belt that can be increased during late pregnancy and then taken up for the transitional period following birth.

In the not-so-distant past, expectant mothers who needed formal wear had few options and often had to have their gowns tailor-made. As the media publicized a number of expectant actors and stars walking the red carpet at various awards banquets in the 1990s, demand for chic styles grew. Today, formal gowns can be found in a variety of lengths and with features such as plunging necklines or tiny straps.

With more women working until delivery, suit makers paid heed and developed lines of career wear. Jackets run the gamut of lengths and fit, as do skirts. Dressy blouses to go with the suits also made an appearance.

Today, expectant mothers can choose from workout gear, bathing suits, and designer jeans. Plunging necklines and tops that hug their curves are also popular. Overalls, capris, and shorts make sure that a woman can build an entire wardrobe of denim separates.

Many women have found they can continue shopping their favorite stores throughout pregnancy. Many boutiques and high-end stores now have maternity departments. Traditional chain department stores have expanded their selection of fashions for expectant mothers as well.

Designers have also recognized that women today not only want chic and stylish items, but also an excellent fit. Clothing for plus-sized, tall, and petite women is now easier to locate than in years past. As pregnancy wear has been a steadily increasing market, manufacturers are sure to find even more choices in the future.
